Fancy a roadtrip?
Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads. Oh wait, we do actually...
Ahoy there Substack family. Today we are celebrating five months of Lakeway’s incredible debut album I’ve Missed The Sun!
Okay, confession.
I’d miscounted and actually thought it had been six months and put some really cool promo things in place only to realise six months since March 20 is actually September. Doh etc.
By then it was too late. I’m not prepared to sit on this awesom video for a whole month. It’s something I’ve had in mind for ages and here you go; a full streaming version of the album on YouTube set to a pretty intense roadtrip Lakeway and I took in February.
The mission took place on Sunday Feb 2nd.
An epic 11 hour, 570 mile round trip, I drove from my home in Blaengarw, South Wales, to pick up Lakeway in his house in Exeter and then drive on to Butlins Holiday Park in Bognor Regis for his set at the Hospitality Weekender. We then made the same journey home.
It was a real moment for us as friends and creative collaborators. Prior to this trip we’d only spent short amounts of time together IRL and mainly chatted on the phone. This mission was a deal sealer on us working together and has led to many other cool journeys and funzies since. And now it’s been processed and imortalised at turbo speed and come out in a way that I didn’t expect to be so captivating or hypnotic. Please check it out, especially if you’ve not yet checked the album. The album is a proper journey in itself!
If you want to know more detail into the trip and everything that had built up to this moment check this UKF feature I wrote at the time.
OTHER COOL STUFF!
One of the most poignant things about Lakeway’s album is how it triggered a whole cannon of releases for 1 More Thing this year.
Since the album dropped we’ve been super regular: Scartip returned in April, Fireworks Factory made his debut in June, Quentin Hiatus joined the fam in July and most recently we’ve dropped Sonnet’s Melon EP.
We’re still banging on about it in a big way and we won’t stop any time soon.
Here we are quizzing him on his melon knowledge…
Don’t have enough time? Watch the supercut for that instant biiiiiiiiiigggggg yeeeeellllloowwwww meeellllloooon hit…
There’s a lot more to share regarding Sonnet’s EP including a few DJ sets and more. The release has only been out for 10 days and the response so far has been wonderful. Especially this cool write-up from Lennart Hoffman. Here’s a little flavour…
That’s just the intro! He’s gone IN on the research and he goes on to big up 1 More Thing too. Thank you. Really appreciate the amount of time and effort that took.
But this is the level and dedication we have to strive for when supporting new music. Pushing new artists can seem like marching through thick gloopy soup sometimes; you have no idea if you’re making any type of progress for long periods of time. This is a very long game which goes against all the current themes of instant gratification or easy hacks. Especially if the artists aren’t following many (or any) current trends.
Next up is our release on September 1 with Bairn who is another brand new artist. Well, they’re not entirely new if you’re a regular checker of 1 More Thing output.
Here they are at our June BMC takeover as a guest of Fireworks Factory…
Great interview, AMAZING mix. This is what you need to know about Bairn right now and it very quickly led to us working together and signing their debut EP - It’s You.
Another substantial curveball in our musical adventure, Bairn takes 1 More Thing to its deepest places yet with a beguiling blend of deep techno, ambient and progressive breaks. Bairn is an artist of many talents too so expect a lot of captivating imagery and visuals around this release and everything else they put out into the universe thereafter.
It’s You is out September 1. Keep those ears peeled!
BMC Business!
Finally, I’d like to highlight some outstanding mixes we’ve just uploaded from our last BMC session. With the first half of the show curated by our very own Louisha, we were inundated with freshness and exciting new selectors going right across the board musically.
Sets from Wolfie, Kitty Churchfield, Finessa, Curse and Mazza are all up in our Mixes playlist and a few little interviews have gone up, too. Check them here.
We’re loving our BMC Saturdays. It’s a great chance for a social, an opportunity to shwocase our most recent release and an awesome platform for new talent and new friends of the brand. Things go pretty spectactularly wonky in places, too. Which is where we’ll leave you for now… Finessa’s utterly bonkers 100% productions set which includes edits of the Powerpuff Girls and Duck Tales.
Can we get a Whoo? Can we get an Ooh?
I’ll be back super soon with another update.
Thank you to everyone who supports us, our artists, our releases and our content. You mean the world to me.
Big love
Dave
